One subject that keeps coming up in the media is about Barack Obama being the “black” candidate. This is only half true and therefore not entirely correct. Obama is half white; therefore he should be referred to as mixed/multiracial or whatever the politically correct term is. Since his ethnicity is such a big deal, people in the media should be clear about it. It confuses people and is, frankly, sloppy work. It would minimize and maybe even eliminate those false rumors about Obama being Muslim or whatever else people are calling him. Isn’t it the responsibility of journalists and reporters to be accurate and not take sides? And isn’t omitting half of his ethnicity taking sides? Doesn’t that break some journalistic code? Isn’t it prejudicial of someone to call him “black” while full-well knowing he is equal parts black and white? Are we basing that “label” on how he looks? Isn’t that the definition of being prejudiced? It’s something to think about.
I don’t like half-truths and inaccuracies. I have a fundamental problem with ANYONE incorrectly labeling ANYONE ELSE, especially a person that is talked about every 5 seconds. This subject is a historical milestone; having anything other than a white male running for president is such a great and liberating event for our nation. Why not be clear about it? Do we want people to be confused about Obama’s ethnicity? Most people can’t handle contradicting information nor will they research it to determine what is fact or fiction. Obama being multiracial actually personifies the spirit of America. I would expect journalists, comedians and talk show hosts to be all over this fact and reveling in the opportunity to correct everyone else’s half-truths. If you call him a black candidate, then in the very next breath you should call him a white candidate, because he is just as “black” as he is “white” despite how he looks.
I want people to respond to this blog and NOT be afraid of being viewed as racist – so please let me know what you think. If you need to put a disclaimer for the stupid or overly sensitive readers, please feel free. Ideally we will progress to a point where the origin of ones parents/ancestors or whatever is irrelevant. I guess ppl will always use race as a ‘descriptor’ but it really has nothing to do with one’s “content”. Provocative question though!!

Ok, I usually hate politics and I especially have hated this presidential race. I was a Hillary Clinton front runner. I thought it would be great that the next non-white male president would be a white female. It should have been a stand for women.
Don’t let Obama fool you. He wants to appeal to many races and people as he can. Every politician does. However, he has ties to being muslim and is very black. Equating him to white, I have not heard that one until now. The presidency is a very serious role and the issue of him having lived over seas and having been muslim is an issue. If they let foreigners run for president my man the Govinator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) would be in office right now!
Hillary was running on the coat-tails of her husband, and the fact that she was a New York Senator.
My absolute ideal candidates were probably Edwards or Huckabee. Edwards couldn’t compete with the money Clinton has, and Obama has been able to raise more money than her. I think Huckabee would have re-energized the Republicans. Romney is too much and should never be in any office. McCain is too supportive of the current administration. He supports the war in Iraq. If he is elected, we might not get our troops out of Iraq for another 8 years. Unfortunately, the presidential race has come down to how much money can you get. The richest or most backed candidates will be in office, not necessarily the best candidates for the people. Once they get in office they will have ‘obligations’ to their fund raisers and to their people that supported them. Over the democrats, I would have taken either Edwards or Hillary. Even if Hillary was running in the main race, I still wasn’t sure I would have voted for her against a republican. I might have. I am definitely voting republican if Obama gets in the race and it looks like he will.

I have had some experiences lately where someone didn’t like my opinion or my delivery of my opinion and they starting slamming my character and calling me names! It was so weird. Thanks for being so enlightened.
Just want to clear up that I am equating him to “white” because it is true, he is 50% white. I am sure you are a number of nationalities and if someone kept calling you Irish because you had freckles and red hair even though you were half Italian, it would get annoying and would simply be a half truth that you would probably correct.
I like John Edwards too. He’s scarily smooth though, geez that smile and southern charm. He answers questions directly and has a fair disposition about him. I like that.
I hate the game show part of politics. Who ever has the most money and charisma wins..Ugh..grow up world, grow up!

You’re a little bit off the mark on this. He refers to himself as black, he’s running his campaign as if he were only black, and he says that he most closely associates himself with the African American community.
Your frustration should not be with media, but rather with an under experienced candidate. They’ve verified their facts from the mans mouth. It’s better for him to run as a black candidate than a mixed race. Look how he sold out his white grandmother (who raised him) when his religious advisor was caught spurting out bigoted comments in the speech that people who know nothing about politics have called “the most moving political commentary I’ve ever witnessed in my life.”

Thanks for posting! Isn’t it the medias job to report NEWS and NOT spin it? I hate all the sensationalism in the media. The news is supposed to be kind of boring. We expect that, we’re watching it to be informed not to be entertained.
As far as him promoting himself as black, I thought in his speech he was clear that he was half white and raised by his white grandmother. Am I mistaken on that? Are you referring to a different speech? I haven’t seen evidence of him favoring his black heritage. I know he has a black wife but we all are a little prejudiced on who we are sexually attracted to a little bit. My past 3 boyfriends pretty much look like brothers. Lol, well maybe not brothers but they look really similar. I definitely have a “type.” I only bring up his wife because I don’t think who he sexually/romantically attracted to supports him favoring HIS “black” side. If you have links you can direct me to that show him verbalizing that he prefers his black heritage over his white. I’d like to see it. I want to be informed. But really my problem is with the media, and in my opinion they are at fault. Obama is entitled to favor whatever he wants. The media is NOT.

I am so tired of “celebrities” honoring their black parent and being proud of being black when it was usually the white parent (or grandparent) that raised them and then get no credit. you know…. We would like to think that every “black” person would be correctly identified by the diversity of the different ethnicities they carry. Although, common knowledge is to say that no matter what other races you may be mixed with, if you are a decendant of the people of the black groups of Africa, that makes you black. Just as African American has been misrepresented as fully Black when there are african americans who are mostly white. But what is a black man but a man mixed with multiple different races and judged by only his origin from one skin color. Same as Asian people are classified as Asian regardless of their other ethnical backgrounds. I agree that Obama’s race should be correctly identified, however it should be the same for all black, white, asian, middle eastern, and people of hispanic and latin orgins. It should not only apply to Obama, because of his candidacy. Although what I think is most important is that he is American. You don’t call white people european american because they might have orgins from other countries as well as multi-race orgins. So black people should be called American just as well.
When has the media ever cared about the whole truth. Let’s focus on ending Bush’s term and not focus on the more trivial parts of this upcoming election. Can we bring the troops home, can we do something with the price of gas. Let’s talk about health care. How about who is really gaining from the recent rise in gas prices!
One more thing people. We need to realize all black people are mixed. Black is just a way to sum up anyone who has someone who has an ancestor who was a black colored person is condidered black. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is truly confused about what being black means. People represent that aspect of them because it is considered to be the part that is the least desired to represent. You should be proud of every aspect of your heritage. And most people don’t appreciate the ability to know what they are comprised of and others might not have the same priveledge. So they classify themselves by the most obvious part of their culture, their features and skin color.

I think that the media has a responsibility to disclose the full truth of ALL news including and not limited to Obama’s background. For the average person living his/her, life, I am not sure it really applies to him. In other words average people are not under scrutiny and don’t have a team of people or a campaign or a publicist. When you get to know someone in the real world, you learn about their background and don’t need them to broadcast their heritage. Looking at an “asian” person and saying they’re asian is acceptable, looking at Lenny kravitz and thinking he is a black dude that fucking rocks is fine. I don’t think the same rules apply to Obama that apply to Roy the multi-racial who plays racquet ball at your health club. I also think because Bush was so horrible we are all more interested, analytical, critical, and cautious of the next president .

I got an e-mail with your last truthaholic entry. Seems we have the same idea about pointing out the truth, but we’re on the opposite ends of positive thinking spectrum. (mine being on the sarcastically pessimistic and yours being on the hopelessly optimistic end) This is what I wrote:

I’m not sure how my blog about the medias failure to tell the full truth about Obama’s ethnicity makes me an optimist. Is it because I expect them to be honest?
I’m not sure it is fair to condemn someone and automatically discount them based on the actions of their parent, especially a parent that was not around to influence their child. There are many sexually shallow philanderers that make great business men. I have no idea why these lines don’t cross but they don’t. How a man treats and views sex/women etc has NO bearing on how effective of a leader he is. My point is, that Obamas dad could be the most womanizing, hooker-seeking, asshole ever, yet still be a brilliant leader and businessman. He could also lie to multiple women and NEVER lie in business. I know it’s crazy but it’s true. Many men are PHD from the waist up and GED from the waist down. One does not affect the other.
I also don’t see how his father being a philanderer or a commitment phobic guy means Obama won’t make a strong leader, to me that is a bit of a jump. There are genetic attributes we inherit but if we get into that then this becomes a discussion about nature –vs- nurture and I am torn on that one. I never can figure out WHY anyone turned out the way they did. Look at your siblings, we are all so different, it’s crazy.

I can say that I understand the whole idea behind being multi-racial.
I am both white and hispanic, but I call myself “other”, or “both”. Genetically, it’s a very complicated thing…you can’t even really say that you are half one and half the other. If that were the case, then we would look exactly like our siblings. Since I’m taller and lighter than my siblings, does that make me more white? Since my older siblings are shorter and darker, does that mean they are more Hispanic?

I don’t think people on this site are not being honest. I think it is fair to say everyone’s scope of reference is limited to what they experience. Is it possible many of us commenting have not experienced a multi- racial lifestyle first hand and you have therefore you have more passionate views? Your passion and experience gives you more credibility but not less or more honesty. Same goes for the commenters.
I suppose you are right that many people are dismissed based on their skin color and the minute they say they are black people view them differently. It may be because it is not what they expected to hear and NOT always a prejudice AGAINST black people. Like when I heard Slash from Guns-N Roes was half black, I was like really? No way? When I heard Tina Turner was part white I was shocked. It wasn’t because I dislike “white” or “black people, I just assumed they were the race they looked more like. There could be a little bit of that going on. Right? I’m sure there are many who react shocked because they straight up dislike black people and are disappointed to hear someone who looks white is half black and vice versa. That sux.

People want the truth about his ethnicity and it is important to know the truth if it is going to be discussed ALL the time. People in middle America are not going to research the falsities that go along with misguiding the public. I think you are incorrect about America accepting the white part of Obama as opposed to the “man.” Many don’t even know he is half white. People who accept him do so becasue of his personality disposition and his strong convictions.

Again, I don’t think it’s about America claiming whiteness it is about the truth. We are what we are. The media is to blame for the confusion about Obama’s ethnicity.

Sadly I have to sort of agree with unclebee. People don’t understand the scrutiny one may constantly face when you are identified as only a black man or woman. I believe it is important to be clear with all people. Because when you apply for a job one can’t explain that his or her mother is a decendant of european ancestry, and that their father is a decendant of african ancestry. It doesn’t make one damned difference. So what Obama is being called black? Why does it upset people for him to identify himslef as such. When we all know that black engulfs everything. I love all and would like to remain open to all opinions but untill people can understand the struggle of being identified as primarily black regardless of orgin and the scrutiny one is subject to because of it. I understand you Sherry in some ways but please try to see what I am saying , if you would. Most black people who happen to be so light skinned that they can pass for white will try it at least once in their life to see how it would be, when you are chocolate like me , there is no other side. Some even play that racial card when convenient if allowed. It happens everyday be it in the limelight or on the street. Why? Ya know, when I was a kid I used to hear other kids claim they had cherokee indian in their family and that is why they are so light with green or greyish blue eyes. Never actually wanting to admit their real family history.
Why? Especially when truthfully 90% of all African Americans do not have cherokee blood. Why the lie? Answer is because most have been ashamed and still hurt by such an awful american history, Most by the hands of another race and the other by our own faults and ignorances that have always served to misrepresent a whole race.
Most blacks who know what it is to have biracial blood through imediate family all recognize that the black race suffers and has suffered so much to the public eye that when you win in life it is almostlike the sweetest joy to say, I as a black person have accomplished this or that breaking the odds and the stereotypes. Where as for a white person, those same accomplishments are all but expected. Example: name one other candidate including Hillary where so much of their personal family tree and church and home life has been scrutinized? Why because simply, they are white, nuff said no further info needed (This explains Bush Jr.) If they had dug this deep on bill clinton , they could’ve been found a freak in the closet.

I have never walked in your shoes. I’ll never truly know what it’s like to be black or multiracial, all I know is how my close friends and I view people. I view people based on their merit and character and I just can’t fathom disliking a person becasue they are black or liking a person because they are white.
I realize my view is not shared by everyone and I feel badly about that.
I’m glad everyone is being so gentle, kind and respectful of everyones views on this site. I’m glad we can discuss this with passion and not let our egos or pride fuel reactive or insensitive retorts.

One more thing I want to add ..I know that people who are mixed/multiracial get pigeon holed early on in life based on how they look and this creates a societal chain reaction. The group that is most like you is the group you will become more accustomed to. It is fine for the average multiracial person living their life, to just call them self what people think they are if this makes life easier for them. Who am I to say anything different. I am not saying Obama even does this, I think he has been pretty clear about being multiracial. I don’t have a problem if Obama or anyone emotionally, genetically, aesthetically or mentally favors one side of his/her ethnicity over the other. I think we all do to a degree. If you’re Irish and Hispanic and you have red hair and freckles and you grew up around other Irish kids you’ll probably celebrate being Irish more. That’s fine, I don’t even know this to be true for Obama becasue I don’t know him personally and have never heard him say the words to confirm this.
I do not see the connection between the tribulations of being mixed in a black and white minded world and the media’s inability to abide by their code of ethics and report factual, and unbiased news. To me there is NO connection between the two. My problem is not with Obama. My problem is with the media and their lack of accuracy when they discuss Obama’s ethnicity.
If the media is discussing what a candidates age is they shouldn’t answer the question based on HOW HE LOOKS or the age group he HANGS OUT WITH. They SHOULD, answer it based on facts. If someone asks THEM WHAT ones ETHNICITY is THEY don’t have the right to choose the side they think he/she is more comfortable with! They should answer it based on the persons DNA and FACTS. It is nonsensical for them to behave they way they are behaving.
You know, it has been a joy to have this conversation with you and get others’ opinions on things. I have friends of multiple different races and all have different beliefs and values but we all respect eachother. I feel that we all (thought we may never admit it) pass judgement on others. I think its embedded in us as human beings to do so. You judge people by how they speak, write, walk, dress, stand, stare, and various other things that have absolutely nothing to do with who they are and what they represent. I seek to understand and move pass this. I want to know the deeper reason for why it is that if I have lighter skin that its more likely that a man will approach me. Or if I dress in Gap rather than rocawear then most black men won’t approach me. Or that just because i’m black I should be ok with the unjustified use of the “N” word. Or if I speak standard english i’m not being “real” or i’m selling out… What the hell is that? These are things that are present amongst people of our own color. So it doesn’t really matter what your view is about my converse and my polo shirt, all I want to know is what your take on the election is…. Or what can we do to help the environment… Or what we think about genetically enhancing food. These are the things that matter the most to me! The pastor of Obama’s church is not racist. I think it is unfair to take clips of a tape about opinions and turn it into racism. I went to that church when I lived in Chicago, and there are many white people that attend that church! The fact that the pastor has opinions (that many other people, black and white) about Bush and how racism still exists does not make Obama a racist!
If you attended a church for 20 years and your pastor is a gay man, does that mean you are gay? If you attended a church and your pastor is a divorced man with his new girlfriend by his side– while he preaches– does that mean you have anything to do with his PERSONAL beliefs and lifestyle? Of course not. The media put that tape out because it is a way to prey on Obama as a candidate to be the next Presisdent of the United States of America. After the “racist pastor tapes”, now the big thing is that Obama is not claming his “White Blood”. Who cares? Hilary has a cheating husband that put cigars in places on ladies other than thier mouths. What in the world does that has to do with her and her qualifications as the next President? Nothing. The same goes for Obama, most people do not care that Obama is Black, White, Mulit-racial, an Alien from Pluto, whatever; Obama represents change. America wants change! Pointing out that he does not get on T.V and says, “I am Obama and my mama is white and my daddy is black and my grandmother is white and my last name is Obama because I have a Muslim background on my father’s side, and blah blah blah blah…”, does not mean anything. He is an American and he is well qualified to run for president and I am rooting for him, not because of his skin color, but because he speaks to US, the citizens of America!
